Officials, residents differ on Kandahar killings

Mar 10, 2011 - 17:00

KANDAHAR CITY (PANinfo-icon): Afghan security forces killed three militants during overnight clashes in southern Kandahar province, officials said, but residents claimed the dead were civilians.

Afghan army and police conducted an operation in the Zherai district, the governor's spokesman, Zalmay Ayubi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Three insurgents were killed and as many detained during the offensive in Zaidan and Saleem villages, he added. The dead and detainees were sons of a local Talibaninfo-icon leader and allies of Torak Agha, a Taliban-era governor of Khost province.

Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi, the district chief, said Zherai had been cleared of insurgents who wanted to regain lost ground. Under pressure from the Taliban, residents took the bodies to the provincial capital in a protest, he said.

Resident Baz Mohammad said Afghan forces cordoned off the area last night and searched four civilian houses. The men were guarding gardens, he said, adding the dead had no links to any militant group.
