Air pollution meters to be installed in Kabul soon

Air pollution meters to be installed in Kabul soon

Dec 05, 2019 - 20:00

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Environmentinfo-icon Protection Agency on Thursday announced installing continuous air pollution measuring and monitoring facilities next week in Kabul, which has become one of the worldinfo-icon’s most populated cities.

The announcement comes following increasing complaints about air pollution in the central capital where air pollution related deaths have also risen.

EPA spokesman Laila Samani told Pajhwok Afghan News that air quality monitoring devices would be installed at eight to ten different areas and the tests would be accurate and shared with people time to time.

Samani said they had currently no permanent air monitoring station. She said recently wrong information was published in local media and social media regarding the level of air pollution in Kabul. “It is true the air of Kabul is polluted but not at the rate to be concerned about.”

She said Kabul air became polluted at night when people burnt woods to warn their homes, but the level of pollution turned near normal during daytime.

She said air became dirty in winter across the country especially in Kabul but the EPA was taking measures in this regard.

Samani said a five-year plan aimed at reducing air pollution in Kabul would be implemented in cooperation with 13 other departments.
