3 Badakhshan girls forced into marriage at gun-point

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Local officials on Tuesday said armed men forcibly married three girls under 18 years of age and then took them to Nasi Darwaz district in northeastern Badakhshan province, while the Talibaninfo-icon say they would punish the men.

Mohammad Ibrahim Qayumi, chief of Nasi Darwaz district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a number of gunmen forced three girls into marrying their men hem in areas of the district under Taliban’s control.

“Based on our information, armed men married Suhaila 13 and Hasina 12 in Obghan village and Hasina 12 in Shorian village of the district without their’s and their families’ consent, the men took the girls with them after the forced marriage,” he said.

“The area is under Taliban’s control and we were unable to chase the armed men,” Qayumi said.

Meanwhile, Arifa Nawid, head of Badakhshan Independent Human Rights Commission, expressed her concern over the incident, which she as called against Islam and human rights. “We want the Taliban to chase those who married the girls at gunpoint without their agreement,” she said.

Mualvi Mohibullah Sharifi, a civil societyinfo-icon activist in Badakhshan, said, “It is illegal in Islam when a girl is married without her consent, their marriage is against Shariahinfo-icon.”

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said, “This action is against Sharia and people should not interfere in others personal life, we are following the case and would punish those involved.”
