2 bases fall 32 security personnel go missing

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): At least 32 security personnel have gone missing and two military bases fallen to militants after a coordinated attack in the Juram district of northeastern Badakhshan province.

Police spokesman Sanaullah Rohani told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents stormed the security bases in Dahan-i-Aab Khastak, Shafchan Qaryajat, Sena, Aab Raghak and Farghamir areas.

As a result, the rebels overran two military bases, Rohani said, adding eight Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and 24 police personnel gad been missing. Two tanks were captured by the Talibaninfo-icon, who also lost four fighters.

Nek Mohammad Nazari, the governor’s spokesman, said both sides suffered casualties. However, he stopped short of providing specific casualty figures.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the military bases had been evacuated before the arrival of the fighters. Three tanks, two pick-ups and some weapons were captured by the Taliban, he claimed.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said the militants attacked security check-posts in Juram district on Friday night.

The security forces repulsed the overnight attack that was staged from several directions. The security personnel tactically retreated from four posts.

It added said the security forces suffered casualties but exact figures were not yet known. The militants also suffered heavy casualties.
