After 6 months gap, polio vaccination begins in Kandahar

Aug 15, 2020 - 20:03

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Anti-polio vaccination resumed in southern Kandahar province after a six-month delay caused by coronavirus in the country.

The resumption of polio vaccination follows the emergence of new positive polio cases in the southern zone.

In addition, around one million children in the southern zone could not receive polio drops over the past 27 months.

Abdul QayyoumPukhla, an official of the healthinfo-icon department, said polio vaccination resumed in the province after three new positive cases were registered recently.

He said the drive was being kicked off from Panjwai and Dand districts where the new cases had surfaced.

On zone level, a total of 26 positive polio cases have been registered in the ongoing year, 12 in Helmand, 8 in Kandahar, 4 in Uruzgan and one each in Nimroz and Zabul provinces.

Pukhla said most of these cases were registered in areas under the Talibaninfo-icon control where the government had no access to implement the door to door campaigns.
