New Laghman governor vows improved security

MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Laghman province on Sunday said efforts were underway to bring back two military battalions to the province from Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok, Rahmatullah Yarmal said security of the province would improve if the two battalions were brought back and three new police districts were set up in Mehtarlam City, the provincial capital.

Governor Yarmal said they had received a large number of complaints from people about insecurity since he took charge as new governor.

He said he visited some districts and noted people’s concerns about insecurity.

When asked about shortage of security force, he said: “Two battalions on mission to Kunar and Nuristan would be brought back to the province in near future.”

The governor also rejected claims that hundreds of militants had emerged on the Kabulinfo-icon-Jalalabad highway.

He also said he had issued warning against illegal armed men in the provincial capital.

He also spoke of his intention to fight corruption, stressing that he would not allow anyone to indulge in corrupt practices.

He said efforts were underway to resume some construction projects in the province along with some new projects to be initiated next year.

He termed land grabbing as an important issue and added that work on a plan to retake such lands in the province.

He said they recently arrested a notorious land grabber in Laghman who paid people to protest in his favor. The governor said he would also work for agricultureinfo-icon development in the province.
