KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Tajikistan has restarted exporting electricity to its energy-deficient neighbour Afghanistaninfo-icon, an official said on Monday.

Power supply from Tajikistan to Afghanistan was suspended in July this year when water levels declined in the reservoir powering the Nurek hydroelectric power plant.

Afghanistan reportedly imported 546. 6 kWh of electricity from Tajikistan over the past six months, Asia-Plus news agency reported.

In 2019, the news outlet said, Tajikistan supplied 1.458.2 billion kWh of electricity (worth $60.6 million) to Afghanistan.

Tajikistan resumed electricity supply to Afghanistan after water rose to the required level in the reservoir, a spokesman for the Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s power utility) said.

Asia-Plus quoted Nozir Yodgori as saying electricity deliveries to Afghanistan, which receives daily up to 1.3 million kWh of power from the Central Asian country.

“If the opportunity arises, we will increase electricity deliveries to Afghanistan,” promised the official.
