US president nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

US president nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Sep 10, 2020 - 08:20

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has been named for the Nobel Peace Prize for helping broker an agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, reports Fox News reported.

The US leader was nominated for the highest prize by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament and chairman of the NATOinfo-icon Parliamentary Assembly.

The Norwegian lawmaker told the new channel: “For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees.”

The Trump administration had played a key role in the establishment of relations between the two hostile nations, Tybring-Gjedde wrote in a letter to the Nobel Committee.

He said: “Indeed, Trump has broken a 39-year-old streak of American presidents either starting a war or bringing the US into an international armed conflict. The last president to avoid doing so was Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter.”

Meanwhile, the White House said in a statement: “This peace deal is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of President Trump, and he is honored to be considered by the Nobel Committee.”

In August, Trump announced the historic peace agreement that would pave the ground for full normalisation of relations between Israel and the UAE.

There were 318 candidates for the 2020 Peace Prize, according to the Nobel website.

Thousands of people, including MPs and governments, university professors and past laureates, can nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nominations for this year's award closed on Jan. 31 and the winner will be announced on October 9 in Oslo.
