DOHA (Pajhwok): High National Reconciliation Council (HNRC) Chairman Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday said durable peace would be established in the country if all stakeholders sincerely joined hands to achieve the goal.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony for intra-Afghan talks in Doha, Abdullah said: “I am honored representing Afghanistaninfo-icon at the event. I welcome and convey you warm regards from President Ashraf Ghani. I pray for the success of these talks between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Talibaninfo-icon.”

Abdullah thanked the leadership of Qatar that played a huge role in making the Afghan peace process a success. He also praised the Taliban for heeding calls from the people of Afghanistan and agreeing to peace talks.

“I can say for sure that our country would welcome this day to end four decades of war, horror and grievances,” remarked the former chief executive.

He said his team had arrived in Qatar for the establishment of durable peace in Afghanistan on the basis of the teachings of Islam and legitimate demand of the people.

“We have a clear intention for sincere dialogue with the Taliban on ending decades of war and ongoing bloodshed in the country,” he insisted.

Abdullah added the people of Afghanistan wanted a government system based on constitutions. Due to lack of a proper system, he said, they had witnessed bitter experiences.

The HNRC chief acknowledged the ongoing conflict had no winner; victory could be achieved only through a political settlement in line with aspirations of the Afghan nation.

He said Afghanistan considered its commitment to peace a religious and historic responsibility.

Abdullah recalled convention of the Consultative Loya Jirgainfo-icon, evolving a national and regional consensus, inauguration of national peace conferences and issuance of religious fatwas were among government efforts for peace and stability.
