Pakistan to set up marts on Afghan, Iran borders

Sep 19, 2020 - 08:38

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistaninfo-icon government plans setting up 18 markets on its borders with Afghanistaninfo-icon and Iran to boost trade with the two neighbours and control the scourge of smuggling.

A high-level meeting chaired by him, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved a plan for creating three border markets as a pilot project -- two in Balochistan and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

These three markets would open by February 2021. Also attended by Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, the meeting vowed stringent steps to curb smuggling.

An ordinance was recently promulgated to control the smuggling of basic food items and currency.  The move has empowered law-enforcement agencies to take action against such illegal activities at the country’s airports and borders.
