GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): More than 2,000 metric tons of plums have been harvested from 260 orchards in southern Ghazni province, agricultureinfo-icon officials said on Saturday.

Abdul Wali Kochi, Ghazni's director of agriculture, said there were four varieties of plums in the province and the most famous was Dil Ganjshak which has international market.

He said Ghazni prune was exported to India, Pakistaninfo-icon, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.

He added “The plum harvest this year is very good and more than 2,000 metric tons of prunes have been produced so far.”

Hayatullah Shafahi, head of a prune processing company, said prunes were produced in Ghazni more than other provinces.

He said prunes had a high price and a kilo of dried plum was currently sold in Ghazni markets for 200 afghanis.

Shafahi said quality packaging was a major problem in Ghazni and as a result the province’s prunes were sold at low prices.

On the other hand, Fariba Mehrzad, a woman who works in a prune processing company, said by working in the company she has been able to solve economic problems of her family.

There are 4,294 orchards of plums in the country and each hector is estimated to yield of seven metric tons.
