Only Daikundi sports stadium in a shambles

Only Daikundi sports stadium in a shambles

Oct 11, 2020 - 17:12

NEILI (Pajhwok): The condition of a sportsinfo-icon stadium in central Daikundi province has turned terrible after it was handed over to the authorities five years ago, sportsmen and officials said on Sunday.

The stadium was constructed at a cost of $1.2 million in 2016 in Neili, the provincial capital. Mini football, volleyball and basketball courts have been constructed in the facility with funds provided by the Counter-narcotics Ministry.

Some sportsmen told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The stadium, which is the only standard facility for sports in Daikundi, is in a bad condition. Some window glasses, doors and fences are broken and grass disappeared.”

Rajab Muradi, a national football player, said: “When the stadium was under construction, everyone was happy and welcomed it as it was a high level stadium but unfortunately the stadium damaged due to negligence of the concerned authority.”

He accused the Sports Department and Physical Sports Department of the province of committing negligence in this regard.

Rahima Hashami, a sportswoman, said: “This sports stadium was the only place where people could practice, but now it is in a terrible condition.”

Zuhal Jahesh, a volleyball player, said the lack of sports facilities was a huge hurdle to the development of sports in Daikundi for girls.

“This is the only decent place for our practice, but it has been in a shambles,” she said.

But Sports Director Ali Ghulami said the grass disappeared due to lack of water.  He said the issue was often shared with the previous governors, but no one paid attention.

He, however, said in future people would be included in the Sports Department structure for protection of the stadium.
