MPs blast irregularities in visa issuance by some nations

Oct 14, 2020 - 15:38

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon members on Wednesday claimed that issuance of Pakistaninfo-icon, Iran, Turkey and India visas has turned into a business in the country and demanded corruption in this process to be stopped.

The reaction comes after a large number of Afghans applied for visa to Pakistan, Turkey and India for medical treatment and some to Iran for work. A number of Afghans also go to the neighboring countries for tourism.

As a result of high demand for visa of Pakistan, Iran and India, black market has come into existence, in which Pakistan visa is sold for $200afs, India for $500afs while Turkey visa is available for $2,000.

Haji Mohammad Hashim, a lawmaker from Faryab province, said he provided an official letter of the Wolesi Jirga to some of his supporters to help them in getting India visa, but the Indian embassy in Kabul rejected their applications and finally they paid agents in the black market to get their visas.

He did not mention the amount of money his supporters paid for the visa but added that two companies that offered India and Turkey visa in Kabul had established their own business of visa distribution.

Helmand Helmand, a lawmaker from Khost province, said that Afghans often travelled to foreign countries for medical treatment and they had to pay money to get visa.

He stressed corruption in this process should be stopped and a fair and transparent system should be established.

Speaker Mir RahmanRahmani also acknowledged that issuance of visa of some countries had become a business for some people.

“Embassies reject official letter of Wolesi Jirga and don’t offer visa to the applicants but some people by offering money are able to get visa which is illegal,” he said.

He tasked Wolesi Jirga Commission for International Affairs to share the problems related to visa distribution with embassies through a legal manner.
