Oct 15, 2020 - 20:52

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Construction work on 119 canals as part of the first phase of Dahla dam’s expansion project was launched in southern Kandahar province on Thursday.

The project was inaugurated in Shah Walikot district by Rural Rehabilitation and Development Minister Mujib Rahman Karimi and a delegation accompanying him.

Kandahar Governor Hayatullah Hayat, tribal elders and local influential personalities were present on the occasion. The canals’ project will cost $59 million.

Karimi said: “The launch of this project is a huge surprise for the people at a time when from one side peace talks are underway and from the other violence has increased.”

He said work on three other parts of Dahla Dam would be kicked off in coming months.

He said the dam has four major parts --- construction of canals, distribution of water pipelines to Kandahar City, construction of walls and generation of 30 megawatts of electricity.

The minister said construction of the canals would help improve irrigation system in seven districts of Kandahar.

Karimi said the total cost of Dahla Dam expansion project was $484 million being provided by the Asian Development Bank.
