PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon plans to negotiate a preferential trade agreement with Afghanistaninfo-icon, says a prime ministerial aide.

The neighbours would launch talks on a new transit trade agreement, Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood said on Tuesday.

Following the expiry of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Transit Trade Agreement next year, the advisor said, the new deal would be inked for a 10-year period.

Addressing the concluding session of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Trade & Investment Forum in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said talks would be held on the preferential trade agreement during his visit to Kabulinfo-icon next month.

“I will visit Afghanistan, where the Pak-Afghan transit trade and preferential trade agreements will be discussed. A preferential trade agreement will be negotiated. This will be followed by a free-trade agreement with Afghanistan.”

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser hoped that realising the trade and investment potential between the two nations would lead to regional prosperity and economic stability.

Enhanced parliamentary contacts would help remove hurdles to trade and investment on both sides of the Durand Lineinfo-icon, he believed.
