GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Local officials say Talibaninfo-icon militants have destroyed a 500-meter portion of the Ghazni-Paktika highway, a claim the insurgent group denied.

Haji Mohammad, acting chief of Andar district of Ghazni province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban destroyed 500 meters of Ghazni-Paktika highway using a bulldozer.

“Only civilians use this route now, but the Taliban still destroyed it,” he added, saying the highway was currently under Taliban’s control.

Ahmad Shah, a resident of Andar district, said that the Taliban destroyed a portion of the highway in Khani Baba area of the district two days ago.

“They brought a huge bulldozer two days ago and destroyed nearly 2.5 kilometres of the road, we know Afghan forces do not use this route,” he said.

A driver on the highway, Samiullah said they would previously reach Ghazni city in 45 minutes, but now it took more than three hours as they used unpaved ways for travelling.

“The Taliban do not allow anyone to travel on the main highway since taking control of this area, all drivers use unpaved ways, now they have destroyed a part of the highway in Khani Baba area,” he added.

Ghazni governor’s spokesman, Wahidullah Jummazada, also said that the Taliban destroyed half a kilometer road in Andar district.

Pajhwok also obtained photos of the road which has been destroyed.

On the other hand, the Taliban denied they had destroyed the highway. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the Taliban did not destroy any roads in Andar district.

Around four years back, the Taliban attacked Andar district center and then took control of Ghazni-Paktika highway.

The Taliban have been accused of destroying roads in Ghazni, Kandahar and Helmand provinces.
