Don’t exit Afghanistan too soon, NATO warns US

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Withdrawing troops from Afghanistaninfo-icon in a hasty manner could risk a resurgence of international terrorism in the country, the NATOinfo-icon secretary-general has warned.

Jens Stoltenberg fired the warning on Tuesday following media reports that US President Donald Trump could issue a formal order drawing down American forces.

Currently, NATO has about 12,000 multinational troops in Afghanistan to train and assist the local security forces. The alliance is committed to funding the Afghan forces through 2024.

In a statement, Stoltenberg faulted Trump’s plans and said: “The price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high.”

Afghanistan could become once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organise attacks on “our homelands”, the NATO added.

The Islamic State, or ISIS, could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it had lost in Syria and Iraq, Stoltenberg continued.

“We went into Afghanistan together. And when the time is right, we should leave together in a coordinated and orderly way,” Stoltenberg said. “I count on all NATO allies to live up to this commitment, for our own security.”
