Ghani, Stoltenberg talk Afghan peace process

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok):  President Ashraf Ghani held telephone conversations with NATOinfo-icon Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the Afghan peace process.

Also on Thursday, Pakistaninfo-icon Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Kabul for talks with President Ashraf Ghani and other senior officials.

This is the Prime Minister’s first visit to Afghanistan since assuming office. The Prime Minister’s delegation will comprise the Foreign Minister, Adviser for Commerce and Investment, and senior officials.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said that Ghani had a telephonic call with Qatari Emir Hamad al-Thani on Wednesday evening.

The statement added the two sides discussed the Afghan peace process and expansion of bilateral cooperation in various areas. 

It added Ghani also spoke with Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general, on Wednesday evening. They talked about the Afghan peace process and NATO’s continued support to train, advise and assist Afghan forces in their fight against terrorism.

Stoltenberg tweeted, “Spoke with @ashrafghani on the situation in #Afghanistan where it has been a long and hard road towards the peace talks. They are fragile but offer the best chance for peace. #NATO remains committed to #Afghanistan's security.”

He wrote, “Good talk with @antoniocostapm today. I thanked him for Portugal’s solidarity with Allies during the #COVID-19 pandemic. We also discussed our mission in #Afghanistan & the importance of #NATO2030 to address the long-term challenges we face together as an alliance.”
